SELENIUM2013 Held

  The 3rd International Conference on Selenium in the Environment and Human Health (SELENIUM2013), jointly organized by International Society for Selenium Research (ISSR), University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences (CAES), was held in Hefei on Nov. 10-14. Dr. Gary Banuelos from United States Department of Agriculture, Dr. LIN Zhiqing from Southern Illinois University and Dr. DUAN Ning from Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences co-chaired the organizing committee, and Dr. YIN Xuebin from USTC is the chair of local organizing committee.   The conference received about 90 extended abstracts and attracted about 100 scientists from 23countries including United States, UK, Australia, China and etc. Several invited speakers, eg. James Mashall from Roswell Park Cancer Institute, USA, Elias Arner from Karolinska Institute, Sweden, gave their excellent keynote speeches. This inter-disciplinary conference covered environment, agriculture, medicine, geochemistry, biofortification and so on. The conference proceedings had been published by CRC Press, USA, as “Selenium in the Environment and Human Health”. This conference provided a platform of academic exchanges for selenium researchers around the world.

  Meantime, International Society for Selenium Research (ISSR), which was the fourth international society in China, was founded and the secretariat was set in USTC. Dr. Gary Banuelos and Dr.Xuebin Yin were selected as president and secretary of ISSR, respectively. The aim of ISSR is a to promote integrated and multidisciplinary selenium research efforts worldwide, and the ISSR will foster the collaborative efforts of researchers and professionals in selenium research by providing a forum for interaction at international conferences and communication via the ISSR website and newsletter.
